Intercollegiate Rifle Club Championships Home Page
History
Collegiate Rifle teams have existed since the early part of the 1900's. An excellent article about college rifle competitions has been written by the NRA can be found here. In 1980 the NCAA began hosting the Collegiate Rifle Championships where rifle teams are Varsity sports that athletes can be awarded scholarships to compete for NCAA represented colleges. In 2010 the Intercollegiate Rifle Club Championships was started by the NRA. As opposed to NCAA Varsity rifle teams the Intercollegiate Rifle Club teams are student led organizations. No athletic scholarships are available to these teams. These championships were conducted by the NRA from 2010 through 2019. The championships were conducted at Fort Benning Ga and were by invitation and minimum qualifying scores. This history for these matches can only be found back through 2012 at which point links are broken.
Covid severely damaged the Intercollegiate Rifle Club Championships as the collegiate program director position was eliminated by the NRA. While the nation returned to a level of normalcy the NRA was entering a state of upheaval. The competitions division at the NRA was subject to severe staff and program cuts. As a result there was no one at NRA to organize and conduct the Intercollegiate Rifle Club Championships.
In late 2020 and early 2021 the leadership of the ASSA reached to Mike O'Connor of the University of Michigan rifle team to coordinate an effort to revive the championships. With the help of Greg and Diane Rice at the XCount the Intercollegiate Rifle Club Championships continued. Instead of hosting the matches in Fort Benning Georgia on a 50 meter outdoor range the smallbore and air rifle championships were hosted at the XCount's 20 point indoor range in Fort Wayne Indiana. It has been hosted there each year since.
